Synopsis:

“The Taming of the Shrew” is one of William Shakespeare’s earliest comedies.  Baptista, a gentleman of Padua, has two daughters.  Bianca, the younger daughter,
is compliant, sweet and pretty, while Katherine, the elder, is independent, cross and ill-tempered.  Although many suitors ask for Bianca’s hand, Baptista insists, as custom dictates, that Katherine must marry first. What follows is a tale full of brilliant characterizations, headstrong heroes and heroines, masqueraders and disguises -- all woven into an hilariously intricate plot that only Shakespeare could write.  We leave it to the audience to decide whether “The Taming of the Shrew” reflects Shakespeare’s personal beliefs as to the status of women, or whether he writes a satire about how men might secretly wish their state of matrimony to be.

Notes from the Director’s Chair…

Welcome, and Welcome Back! Shakespeare on Main Street is excited to share with you our tantalizing production of William Shakespeare’s comedy, “The Taming of the Shrew.” All the ranting, chasing and battle of wits is certainly in our presentation. Disguises run rampant on the stage, whether behind a costume or behind the facemask covering one’s true feelings. One of the hidden-in-plain-sight dynamics of our show is tenderness being sought. We all want to be loved for who we really are. Kate and Petruchio are no less. Forgive them, as they and every other character attempt to make that human connection.

Enjoy!
